Fairy shares how best to use your dishwasher in order to save money
Dishwashers are a great way to save time when cleaning cutlery, plates and more. However, lots of people don’t realise that certain items can damage the dishwasher as well as the items if they are placed in for a clean. For example, wooden items, non-stick pots and pans as well as sharp knives.
Smol’s sustainable cleaning expert, Kathleen Bell, has shared the items to “never” put in the dishwasher ever.
The expert told Express.co.uk: “A full dishwasher run with the most water-efficient setting uses almost 10 times less water to wash the same amount of dishes as washing them up by hand.
“However, for many of us, washing up by hand is the only option and running the dishwasher when it’s not full is a surefire way to run up your energy and water bills.
“There are also some items you should always avoid placing in the appliance.”
1. Non-stick pots and pans
While it can be convenient to place non-stick pots and pans in the dishwasher, especially if there is room, this isn’t advised.
According to the expert, the non-stick coating can become damaged when they are added to the dishwasher, so make sure to hand wash these instead.
Kathleen explained: “The heat of your dishwasher can warp wood or cause it to crack. Wooden chopping boards, spoons or items with wooden handles should all skip the dishwasher in favour of the sink.”
A good way to deep clean wooden chopping boards is to use baking soda and a lemon to make sure it is disinfected.

2. Insulated bottles
Bottles can be hard to clean, especially if you don’t have a tool or brush to make sure they are totally clean, making it tempting to put them in the dishwasher.
However, the vacuum seal of travel mugs and thermos flasks can become damaged by dishwashing so make sure to tackle these by hand.
3. Cast iron
The cleaning expert continued: “Cast iron pans need to be seasoned – the process by which you create a non-stick surface on the pan – and the detergents used in dishwashing will break down this layer, potentially allowing the iron to rust.
“For items like cast iron pans, avoid all soap and wash only with water in the sink.”

4. Sharp knives
When it comes to cutlery, all of it is generally safe in the dishwasher, besides items like sharp knives including steak knives.
This is because you want sharp knives to stay sharp, and putting them in the dishwasher can result in a dull blade.
Kathleen said: “So for those times when you need to wash up by hand, here is my perfect five step system for a great and cost effective clean.
“Firstly, scrape off any excess food or grease into the bin. Next, you want to have two separate washing up bowls or a split sink and fill one side with hot soapy water.
“Fill a second with clean hot water without any soap. Soak your items in the hot soapy water to loosen any debris. You’ll use less water and energy when the time comes to scrub them.
“Don’t hold them under a constantly running tap. Start with the cleanest items like water glasses to help keep the water cleaner for longer and avoid multiple refills of your washing up bowl or sink.
“Use the second bowl of clean hot water for rinsing off all the suds before leaving items to air dry or using a tea towel that can be washed and reused.”
When it comes to dosing, make sure not to use too much washing up liquid as this can result in too many bubbles.
