‘Whiten’ even the ‘toughest stained grout’ in just 20 minutes with natural items

Express tests out baking soda hack to clean grout between tiles

The biggest culprits of stained grout in bathrooms are mould and mildew, which can turn grout an unpleasant grey colour.

However, a build-up of shampoo and shower gel can turn bathroom grout into an unappealing shade of yellow or orange.

Thankfully, cleaning mouldy or discoloured grout is easier than households might think, and it’s a quick way to transform a bathroom and breathe new life into it.

These days, commercial cleaners are highly effective and powerful. However, they often get their power from harsh ingredients that may be harmful to your skin or to breathe in.

Thankfully, there are natural household cleaning products available to use as an alternative to these toxic chemical products as one expert has detailed.

Chantel Mila, otherwise known as @mama_mila on TikTok, has shared a video on how she “whitens and brightens” stained grout with a “simple mix” that only uses natural items.

According to the cleaning influencer, her hack will eliminate the need for hours of scrubbing as it will “whiten and brighten even the toughest grout”.

To make this “simple mix” households will need one cup of baking soda, one-third of a cup of hydrogen peroxide, one tablespoon of washing-up liquid and a grout brush.

Cleaning with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide is just as effective as commercial products. It is cheaper, safer, and better for the environment, too.

Baking soda is a safe deodoriser, whitener, and household cleaner – and it’s an effective natural grout cleaner.

Because baking soda is also a mild abrasive, using it for cleaning grout lines gives households extra firepower without the risk of scratching their tiles.

Express.co.uk even put baking soda to the test on stained grout and found it to be highly effective.

Hydrogen peroxide has a similar chemical composition to water with one extra oxygen atom. It breaks down quickly in sunlight into oxygen and water, meaning it’s safe to use around the home.

It’s a natural disinfectant and will loosen dirt and remove stains, making it a great alternative to bleach. In fact, hydrogen peroxide is also known as “oxygen bleach”.

Hydrogen peroxide won’t damage normal tiles or coloured grout. However, households shouldn’t use it on polished marble.

Apply the mix with a grout brush and leave it on for 20 minutes while the mix “does the hard work of removing stains and buildup”.

Once the time is up Chantel claimed that all households have to do is “mop to reveal brightened grout”.
