Lynsey Crombie shares how to check if you need new pillows
If pillows are not replaced or are used without protectors, they can turn yellow very quickly due to sweat when sleeping.
However, there are several ways to avoid this and to help keep them fresh throughout the year.
1. Use pillow protectors
Jessica Hanley, founder of Piglet in Bed, said: “If you are someone that is prone to sweating (or drooling) in your sleep then it might be a good idea to invest in some waterproof pillow protectors.
“These will ensure that any moisture is kept from seeping down into your pillow which, over time, could lead to a build-up of bacteria and even the growth of mould and mildew!
“Pillow protectors are very easily removed and can be washed regularly with the rest of your bedding.”

2. Baking soda to freshen
Baking soda is a great natural cleaning product which can be used for a variety of jobs around the home, including odour removal.
Ideally, pillows should be washed three to four times a year, ensuring to follow any manufacturer’s instructions on how to do so.

In between these washes, the pillow will likely need to be freshened up, especially during warm weather.
Jessica noted: “Bicarbonate of soda is great for absorbing moisture and reduces odours, which makes it perfect for sweaty pillows.
“All you need to do is sprinkle an even amount across your pillows and leave to sit for a couple of minutes
“After waiting, use a handheld hoover with a small nozzle to hoover your pillow clean, making sure to remove all bicarb residue.”

3. Wash pillowcases regularly
While pillows only need washing around twice a year, pillowcases should be washed around once a week, if not more.
The expert said: “Pillow covers typically take the brunt of most sweat or dirt and therefore can start to look dirty and get a little bit smelly.
“Keeping on top of cleaning them will not only keep your pillows looking and smelling fresh but can also prolong the life of your pillows.”
