PS5 Slim is almost here – but fans have spotted that the detachable disc drive comes with a strange catch | The Sun

PLAYSTATION stunned fans earlier this month by announcing that it would be releasing a new model of PS5.

Known by fans as the PS5 Slim, it is a much smaller and lighter model than the original release version.

The main benefit of the new models is that you can buy the more expensive console with a disc drive, or the cheaper digital-only model.

While both of these were available before, there will also be a separate disc drive that can be added to upgrade the digital model.

The disc drive will cost an additional £100 ($80), making the price of the digital console with the upgrade more expensive than the edition with the disc drive included.

However, people were excited by the prospect of being able to change up whether the console has a disc drive or not.

Eagle-eyed fans have spotted that the additional disc drive might come with a hidden issue.

Special editions of the new PS5 slim have been spotted including copies of Spider-Man 2, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Looking closely at the back of the box, people have noticed a concerning message in the console’s fine print.

The back of the box reads: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon set up.”

It’s not clear why an internet connection would be required but there is a popular theory.

It is thought that the internet connection is required in order to check for drivers to make sure that the disc drive is legitimate.

This means that it is unlikely that third parties will be able to make their own PS5 compatible disc drives that could be cheaper in price.

The decision is not unexpected as PlayStation previously invested a lot in expensive proprietary memory cards for the PlayStation Vita.
